The Avant RS2 came out in 1994. Audi had an overstock of 80 Avants because it wasn't the great succes they had hoped for, and the staff wanted to get rid of this problem. At this moment Porsche was finishing the last 500E's, the super-Mercedes back then. When Porsche was finished, they could start with the RS2, and that wasn't a bad thing for them, because Porsche wasn't doing that good at all. By giving Porsche this project, they managed to stay alive, and in the meanwhile the could start development of the Boxster and 993.
The base was an S2 Avant, which was totally transformed with Porsche parts. It had to become the fastest estate, with the ease/balance/handling of an Audi quattro. Those last words weren't exactly typical for Porsche at that time, certainly not those equiped with a turbo!

The RS2 started with the S2-gearbox (same as a 968 turbo S2). The S2's left the factory in Salzgitter without front bumper, seats, mirrors, etc... and went to the Porsche factory in Zuffenhausen. Here it got the frontbumper and mirrors from the 993. The interior got a 300km/h dial, an other steering wheel, and recaro seats. The wheels were replaced with Porsche design 17" versions. The suspension got upgraded with bilstein dampers, the brakes got bigger (304 or 322mm later on) and the rotors and pistons got replaced by those of the 928 Club-Sport.

The engine is the one from an S2, but Porsche managed to extract a few more Hp by placing other injectors, bigger turbo, other airbox+filter, tuned engine management, other throttle-valve, bigger intercooler, boostpressure raised from 1.0 to 1.4 bar (1.5 on overboost), other catalytic converterrs, other intake manifold and high flow exhaust manifold. In the end that summed up for 315hp and 410Nm. It could reach 100 in 5.4 seconds, although many tests showed rather low 5sec, of even under 5 sec. The topspeed was limited to 262km/h, presumably because Porsche didn't want the RS2 to go faster than their own product!

Only few people know that there were also 4 RS2 sedans, but Porsche didn't want that to go into production. Again they were scared it would be too much competition for their own!
The RS2 is already a true legend, and is a truly unique car due to the close partnership in the production between Porsche and Audi. Also interesting to know is that the RS2 isn't an Audi or a Porsche... it's official name is "Avant RS2".

In total about 2891 examples were produced.
